There are now numerous tools available on the web which you can use to extend the functionality of your gmail account, from Outlook intergration, to tray notifiers, right through to using Gmail as a backup system with PHP.
Here is a list of the tools I was able to find on the internet to extend your Gmail account:
- Gmail as a backup system with PHP allows you to turn your Gmail account into a temporary backup and file transport system.
- GTray is a small Windows program which places an icon in the system tray and alerts you when you have new mail in your Gmail account.
- Pop goes the Gmail acts as a layer between Microsoft Outlook (or any POP3 mail reader) and Gmail allowing you to read your email in any standard POP3 mail client without having to use your web browser.
- This Gmail Notifier is an extension for the Mozilla browser and Mozilla FireFox which shows once again how many unread emails you have.
- g-mailto Bookmarklet allowing you to quickly open up the Gmail composition page through your web browsers’ bookmarks.
- GMail Loader (GML) will allow you to import your existing mail (so long as it is an mbox file) into Gmail with a few keystrokes and clicks of a button.
- G-Mailto will associate mailto: links on webpages with the composition screen of your Gmail account.
- GetMail forwards email from your hotmail account directly into Gmail!
- gExodus is another free utility which you can also use to import mbox files directly into Gmail.
- gCount is a program for all you Mac users allowing you to be notified of new Gmail messages in your menu bar.
Hopefully thats enough to keep you busy for a while
