Habbo Hotel

Following an article written here on the ‘experts’ Messenger Plus! Zone Forums, I decided to take a further in depth look at the Habbo Hotel service available on the web. Habbo Hotel appears to be an online discussion or chat centre facilitated around the idea of rooms which actually contain moving people, furniture and actions.
Messenger Plus! Zone Investigates’ first article, “Habbohotel.com”, came from a tip of a user of the service saying that it is simply WRONG to charge REAL MONEY for Virtual Furniture on a very insecure site. We agreed and looked into it.
The Habbo Hotel service reserves the right to charge for whatever services it likes, and they also reserve the right to charge as much as they please for users to have advanced access to the service. To show the complete ignorance of this articles’ writer, he decided to disregard the fact that they somehow have to provide a way of paying for the server whilst allowing a free service. Huh!
The report filed with us was very clear, Habbo Hotel uses methods requiring users to pay for credits to use the Extra Furni and Services.
Yes, they do. I used to know one of the initial designers of the system. Is there something wrong with requiring a credit card for purchasing Credits. Although the system is designed for younger users especially children there are many older users of the service who are willing to pay for the service as well as support the funds for the management of the servers.
# Habbo Hotel charges different amounts of money for credits through different payment methods
# The site is very insecure, several users we talked to admitted to hacking the site at once
# The site is intended for CHILDREN users, which leads us to the believe that they expect children to call the numbers required to use Habbo Hotel’s Extra Furni and Services.
# Habbo Hotel requires users to BUY credits to use the Extra Services and buy Furni.
# Habbo Hotel uses Insecure Shockwave Movies
The service is secure. Users who ‘hack’ the service are just users who register and pretend to be technical support staff for the service trying to gather usernames and passwords of other users to try and scam their points form them. As I noted previously, users can purchase credits and they can also be transferred credits from other accounts. Users are not required to use the credit card facilities to purchase more credits, there are numerous other method of purchasing credits.

To say the service uses insecure shockwave movies is just an outrageous accusation, with no evidence to prove this is actually true. The data sent to and from the Habbo client to the Habbo servers is encrypted, and only the intended recipient of the message will be able to receive the messages.

The next time the ‘MPZ’ decides to investigate into a service, I suggest they actually do some background research on how these ‘hackings’ are occurring, and think of alternative reasons for the service to be charging for Credits.

If surfiOnline goes offline..

This is why..
APPROACHING RESOURCE LIMIT
24.1 GB of traffic has been used this month out of 26 GB limit
I logged into the control panel today, and saw that I had actually reached 28gb..

This is mostly thanks to the Messenger Plus! plugins database, which has now been moved off of this account.

Bad news is, the stats reset on the 22nd..

Your Guide to Typing

..on the Internet.

Every so often, someone talks to me in their own form of abbreviated internet language. This annoys me because you have to sit down and try and figure out what every second word is, then you can at least obtain half a sentence and maybe it is understandable. If you can’t then you have to go back through and read it all, paying close attention. Hopefully after this long and time consuming process you have something that makes sense. But the majority of the time you don’t.

I can’t stand people who abbreviate words excessively on the internet, and what they don’t realise is that sometime is not even an abbreviation, the word is the same length except they change a few letters around, or they could be too lazy to type one more letter to form a ‘real’ word in the English language. Works like “sik”, “guyz”, “newaiz”, “u”, “r”, “nite”. Read more for the abbreviations which are becoming common and annoy me the most!

I can understand this in SMS Messages on a mobile phone because you are limited to a certain amount of characters per message, but on the internet, its not like you are really limited, or you pay by the character or message you send.

It’s not just the abbreviations either. It’s also the aLtErNaTe CaPiTaLiSaTiOn, as well as the all-caps text, such as “OI! MAN! MAN!” That is just plain outright annoying and hard to read. If you want me to read your message and pay any attention, and even respond to it quicker, you could type it properly? Oh, then we also have the people who constantly hassle you, for example, they will say “Hey” once, then when you respond they will say “Hey” four more times, then there is the other groups who will just constantly send you messages even if you don’t reply. For example:
User: Hey
User: Hi
User: Are you there?
If i was there, perhaps i would respond to you?

I can understand things like “bbl”, “brb”, “cya”, because I too use them and they are quickly becoming a ’standardised’ way of talking on the internet. But these other abbreviations, people just make them up as they please.

So please! If you are going to talk to me, can you try and talk in English, that we can both understand?

Newaiz! I guess I will be c’in u around!

Common and annoying abbreviations include:

I’m sure there are loads more too, these are all that my brain is capable of picking up right now though..

Whats Up?

Well, things have been pretty quiet on the home front here, not much to report, for not much has been happening. I’ve been really busy with school, work, MyBB and afew other things in my life as well as one really important person (:D).

I actually begun writing my own blogging software the other night, pretty much because no other blogging software suits and meets the exact requirements that I expect. bBlog is very good though and comes very close. WordPress? Well, the template engine my my eyes ’sucks’, its basically just a PHP file you are editing. I cannot say my blogging software will be alot better by it will be good enough for me. It will use the SMARTY template engine (which bBlog also uses), and will have a simple module system. I’m not sure if I ever plan finishing it, but at least I have made a start.

Tomorrow the school teachers are on a strike, so we have the day off. Hopefully that means I will be able to get a bit of work done on MyBB, AvidBlog, or even this site. As a result of this we also received our school reports today. I didn’t do too badly.. 2nd in Mathematics (Damnit! I got told I was first), 2nd in Geography (Damn you Big O!), 2nd in IPT (Information, Processes and Technology – Computers) (STFU Joel ;) ). I could have done better in Physics and English too, so we’ll just disregard those results for now.

Anyway, i’m off for now to continue watching Season Three of Futurama..

Keep in touch..

Messenger Plus! 3.0 Released.

Thats right, Patchou released version 3.00 of his popular MSN Messenger addon approximatly 2 hours ago via the Messenger Plus! website, and the Community Forums.
]It’s now official, Messenger Plus! 3 has finally been released! It took me 5 months to redesign all the software and I can tell you that I’m very happy with the result. As you can see, msgplus.net is also brand new and will continue to be updated during the week. All the sections have been rethought, new feature pages have been added, new merchandise is available for Messenger Plus! 3… soon, the site will even include localized content for the main pages! a new software, a new web site, both of them still as free as ever: what more could you ask? :)
The new version boasts new and exciting features to ehnance your MSN Messenger experience, as well as many tweaks from the previous version to allow easier navigation and feature discovery in the software.

It has been a pleasure beta testing Messenger Plus 3.00 for Patchou, and I am sure the other testers have also enjoyed the experience as much as i have.

Guido has also redesigned the Messenger Plus! website, as well as the plugins database, and front what I can tell so far he has done a very good job doing so. Very high quality work, for a high quality program. (Rumour has it that a new forum skin is on the way too!)

I would just like to take the time to thank Patchou for this release, and to also thank him for all of the help he has given me in the past. Thanks Patch! :)

What are Clickies?

About four people have already asked me ‘What are clickies?’ and after I explained, they asked ‘What for?’. This should clear up these questions.

Clickies are links that I have found on the internet, things that may be funny, may be serious, or things I would just like to share with you. The clickies are located on the right (—>), and will contain a link to the ‘clickied’ item along with a small description. You can also post comments on the clickies by clicking the number inside the parenthesis (which is also the number of comments that have been posted). The latest 10 clickies will be shown on the homepage, other and older clickies will always be accessible via the ‘Clickies Archive’ page.

Why? Because I can :)
